Day one
The bus tour will take you to different near coastal localities in northernmost Denmark. On our way from Copenhagen we will stop at Kasmose
forest on Fyn to have a coffee break and explore the forest. The forest is located on plastic clay and is literally slowly floating into Lillebælt.
The flora in the forest and at the slopes is very rich. Among the plants we may see is: Carex sylvatica, Briza media, Orchis purpurea, Platanthera
chlorantha, Dactylorhiza fuchsia, Epipactis helleborine and E. pupurata, Neottia nidus-avis. Equisetum telemataia is abundant in the many spring
areas in the forest.
From Kasmose skov we will drive north through Jutland and have lunch at an inn. After lunch we continue our journey north to a saline/tidal meadow
at Jerup at the east coast of Vendsyssel. Here we will se most of the species typical for Danish saline/tidal meadows.
After Jerup there is a short drive to Ålbæk Gl. Kro where we will stay for the night.
Day two
After breakfast we drive north to Råbjerg mile. On the nutrient poor flats and in the shallow lakes behind the migrating dune we can find the
small fern Pillularia globulifera - rare and local in most of its distribution area. Other species found are: Lycopodiella inundata,
Lycopodium clavatum, Radiola linoides, Drosera rotundifolia and D. intermedia, Euphrasia stricta, Ranunculus flammula, Lobelia dortmaniana,
Jasione montana, Litorella litoralis, Carex viridula and C. arenaria, Eleocharis palustris, Juncus articulatus and Agrostis stolonifera.
On our way back to the parking lot we pass a nutrient poor meadow grassed by sheeps. In June the meadow is pink due to more than 50.000 flowering
Dactylorhiza maculata. Other species we may see here are: Eriophorum angustifolium, Carex nigra and C. lasiocarpa, Molinea
coerulea, Holcus mollis and Aira praecox. At the parking lot there is a large stand of Narthecium ossifragum.
After Råbjerg mile we drive southwest and we will have lunch at a local inn. After lunch we drive to the locality Vandplasken. Vandplasken
is a raised sea bed area between the old Littorina sea slope - Lien, and more recently formed dunes at the present coast. The locality is a
mosaic of shallow lakes and flats on the original calcareous sea bed and small shifting sand dunes.
The locality contains one of the richest floras in Denmark, and includes many sedges and grass species. The orchids Dactylorhiza majalis
ssp. purpurella var. majaliformis, Dactylorhiza incarnata ssp. incarnata, Dactylorhiza incarnata ssp. lobelii, Dactylorhiza
maculata, Platanthera bifolia, Epipactis palustris, Herminium monorchis, Liparis loeselii are all found in Vandplasken, and the small
Selaginella selaginoides has its only locality in Denmark here.
After Vandplasken we drive south to Slette strand where we will stay at Rønnes Hotel over night. If possible we will drive
directly on the beach from Løkken til Blokhus. In the evening it is possible to make an excursion to the nearby Svinkløv, or to take a bath in the sea.
Day three
After breakfast we drive westwards to Bulbjerg. Bulbjerg is a limestone knoll and towards the sea it has been eroded to form steep cliffs -
the only bird cliffs in Denmark - so bring your binoculars. During the Second World War the Germans placed a radar station on the top.
The flora on the top is typical for dry calcareous areas in Denmark. It is a low grassland vegetation and Geranium sanguineum is seen in large
numbers. However, the local endemic Euphrasia dunensis is also found here.
Vejlerne is a 6000 acres reclaimed area and consists primarily of shallow lakes, tidal and saline meadows and many acres are covered by
Phragmites australis. Vejlerne is the largest bird sanctuary in Denmark, and among many species of wading birds and ducks, Spoonbills are
usually seen in august. We will have the opportunity to study the flora in less saline meadows in the north of Vejlerne, and the birds from
hides or observation towers. The shallow lakes contain many species of submerged plants. In the more or less saline meadows we can find many
species of sedges and grasses.
After Vejlerne we will return to Copenhagen and have lunch at a local inn on the road.
